Description

The famous film version of the cult Broadway musical, which became an absolute triumph at the Oscars in 1961 - the film took 10 golden statuettes and took second place in the list of the best American film musicals (the championship is held by Singin' in the Rain, filmed ten years earlier) . The music for the film was written by composer Leonard Bernstein along with Stephen Sondheim. The plot of the musical takes its origins from the classic story of Romeo and Juliet and takes the viewer to New York of the 20th century, when brutal gang wars dominated the streets of the slums. On one side of the barricades was the Puerto Rican Maria, on the other - the white immigrant Tony. They fall in love with each other and defend their love in front of everyone who has forgotten about human feelings and lives according to the harsh laws of the gangster world. Filming took place in the real slum area of the West Side of Manhattan and took place right before the block was demolished. Then Lincoln Center settled here.
