Young U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Chris Burnett, one of the Navy's top aviators, longs for the chance to experience real combat instead of watching his colleagues train. However, his commander, Admiral Reigart, believes that Chris is not ready yet... And there is no particular military action in sight. But then, during one of the reconnaissance missions, Burnett photographs something that was not intended for prying eyes and his plane is shot down.
