Description

Los Angeles, 1948. Jake is hired by a land broker with the same name, Jake Berman. Berman is convinced his wife is cheating on him and asks Gittes to dig up all the details. Gittes, in turn, not only uncovers all the details but also suggests that Berman "catch" his wife red-handed, right during an intimate rendezvous. The two Jakes ambush the unfaithful wife. At the crucial moment, Berman, instead of creating a jealous scene, kills her lover. And the whole thing could easily be chalked up to a fit of passion, if the victim hadn't turned out to be Berman's business partner. After his partner's death, Jake Berman inherits all the money. Now Gittes must determine whether the incident was an accident or a cold-blooded murder.
