Dean Corso, one of the best specialists in finding, evaluating, and purchasing rare editions, receives an unusual but highly lucrative order from the owner of the world's largest library of occult books: to determine the authenticity of the collection's crown jewel, a 17th-century folio titled "The Nine Gates to the Kingdom of Shadows," which, according to legend, can summon Lucifer himself. He embarks on a journey across Europe filled with dangers and mysteries. But it is only when the corpses of those Dean Corso had recently met begin to appear on his path to unraveling the mystery of "The Ninth Gate" that the sinister truth is revealed to him. He realizes that in this diabolical game, not only his life but also his soul is at stake.
