Description

A boy named John and his sister, Pearl, were "lucky" enough to witness their father being hauled away by the police, arrested for robbery and the murder of two men. The father was sentenced to death and hanged, leaving the children with the stolen money, which he had hidden under John and Pearl's promise not to tell anyone about the hiding place, not even their mother. In prison, he met the preacher Harry Powell, who in reality was a ruthless killer obsessed with religion, with the words "love" and "hate" tattooed on his fingers. Powell decided to get to the hiding place and, to that end, married a trusting widow.
