16-year-old Suzume lives in a quiet town on the island of Kyushu. One day, on her way to school, she meets a young traveler who asks where the ruins are in the surrounding area. Curiosity takes over, and the girl decides to see what’s so interesting there - she makes her way to a local abandoned place, finds a mysterious door there, opens it and pulls out a strange stone from the ground. Soon, a giant entity emerges from the open door and causes an earthquake. Now Suzume, along with that same stranger, suddenly turned into a highchair, has to go in pursuit of a harmful talking cat in order to close the doors that are opening throughout the country and prevent new destruction.
