September 1941. Young lovers - the captain's son, artillery cadet Kostya, and the daughter of an enemy of the people, Nastya - find themselves on barge No. 752, which is supposed to take people out of besieged Leningrad along Lake Ladoga. The old vessel has long served its useful life, but in the absence of other options, the tugboat captain agrees to take on board one and a half thousand passengers - twice as many as it should be. But soon after the barge sets off, the favorable weather forecast gives way to a storm warning.
