Whispering Pages / Stone / Save and Protect
A deluxe collector's edition featuring three of the early masterpieces of visionary Russian director Alexander Sokurov (Russian Ark, Alexandra) in newly translated and restored director's cuts: Quiet Pages (1994) (70 min.), a brooding, beautiful film inspired by nineteenth-century Russian literature, primarily the novel “Crime and Punishment” by Dostoevsky; "The Stone" (79 min.), a mysterious fable about a young night watchman's encounter with Chekhov's ghost; and Save and Preserve (1989) (133 min.), a visually sumptuous adaptation of Flaubert's Madame Bovary. Quiet Pages (1994) Existential drama based on Russian prose of the 19th century, in particular, “Crime and Punishment” by F. M. Dostoevsky. The director translates the atmosphere of the novel into the visuals without touching on its intrigue. The hero, in a somnambulistic state, wanders through silent St. Petersburg... Save and Preserve (1989) The film preserves the characters and plot of the novel “Madame Bovary”: marriage, attempts at love, collapse, despair and suicide of the heroine. Stone (1992) A strange young man works as a watchman in a certain House-Museum. One night in the bathroom, he meets another strange man who looks like a certain famous writer. He selflessly washes himself, and the government agency responds to the boy’s demand to leave the premises with inarticulate muttering...
