XVI century. Livonia. In one of the aristocratic houses, the old knight Risbiter dies. He bequeathed to his son a box containing a family heirloom. The spiritual shepherds of the nearby monastery want to take possession of the box in order to increase the glory of the monastery. The young heir agrees to cede the relic to the church, but with one condition: he must be given the beautiful Agnes, the niece of the abbess of the convent, as his wife.
