In the summer of 1954, U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels and his partner Chuck Auhl are sent to investigate the disappearance of killer Rachel Solando, who escaped from the Ashecliff Asylum for the Criminally Insane on Shutter Island, in the sea off Boston. The hospital is strictly guarded, 42 of its patients are in ordinary buildings, and another 24 especially dangerous ones are inside a former military fort, converted into the third building of the hospital. Teddy is burdened not only by the mystery of Rachel Solando's disappearance from a locked ward and his own incessant headaches, but also by his own dreams and memories: about his wife Dolores, who died in a fire, and about the German death camp Dachau, in the liberation of which he took part in 1945. The unpleasant associations of the gloomy hospital with a death camp are exacerbated when the bailiffs meet the elderly German doctor Nehring.
