The life of Walter Garber, a New York subway dispatcher, is firmly on the rails. Coordinating a well-functioning transport system, he could not even imagine that an ordinary everyday day would turn into real chaos for him and force him to expand the scope of his competence. An armed gang of terrorists, led by Ryder, hijacks the train and demands a ransom payment within the hour in exchange for hostages. Garber becomes Ryder's main opponent in an intense psychological game. By distracting the terrorist's attention, he tries to calculate what the hostages' chances of survival are. And soon even the distrustful mayor of New York will understand how great the danger is.
