Memories
Memories is an anthology film consisting of three independent episodes linked by a common theme: memory, illusion and the relationship between the individual and society.
1. Magnetic Rose (directed by Koji Morimoto)
A team of space technicians responds to a distress signal from a giant abandoned ship. Inside, the two explorers discover a sumptuous and disturbing environment, dominated by the memories of Eva Friedel, a famous opera singer who has disappeared.
The ship, controlled by artificial intelligence, traps the men in a labyrinth of illusions created by Eva's memories, forcing them to confront their own traumas and desires.
It is a dark, psychological, and visually baroque episode written by Satoshi Kon.
2. Stink Bomb (directed by Tensai Okamura)
A young researcher, Kiyoshi Nirasaki, mistakenly ingests an experimental substance believing it to be medicine. Instead, the formula transforms him into a living biological weapon: his body emits a lethal odor that kills anyone who comes near him.
Unaware of the disaster he is causing, Kiyoshi travels across Japan while the army and government desperately try to stop him.
It is a satirical, grotesque, and frenetic episode that criticizes bureaucracy and military madness.
3. Cannon Fodder (directed by Katsuhiro Otomo)
Set in a dystopian city built entirely around enormous cannons, it follows a day in the life of a child and his father, both part of a militarized society obsessed with war against an unseen enemy.
The episode is made as a single continuous visual stream, without traditional cuts, and represents a fierce criticism of propaganda and the normalization of conflict.
