Ten-year-old Cady and her parents are involved in a car accident. Her parents are killed, and she goes to live with her aunt Gemma, an employee of a high-tech toy corporation. Unsure how to cope with the sudden responsibility and reluctant to spend time with her niece, Gemma introduces Cady to an experimental android doll, M3gan, which possesses artificial intelligence. The new "friend"'s primary goal is to protect the child from all kinds of physical and emotional harm, and M3gan takes this all too literally.
