Writer John and his girlfriend Ellen are enjoying a quiet evening in the desert, watching the stars twinkling in the sky through a telescope, when the silence of the twilight is cut by the noisy fall of a huge luminous object. Being curious by nature, John goes on a foray to the crash site the next morning, where he discovers what appears to be an alien ship. The sheriff and reporters who later arrived at the huge crater are inclined to see John’s words about the first contact with an alien intelligence as headlines for the “yellow” press, but soon strange events occur in a nearby town: people disappear in the desert, returning home in the same guise, but with empty eyes and unclear thoughts...
