Description

The wizard Merlin gives Lord Uther Pendragon the magical sword Excalibur, allowing him to become king. At a feast celebrating the alliance between Uther and the Duke of Cornwall, Uther falls in love with Igraine, the Duke's wife. The next day, Uther unsuccessfully besieges the castle and asks Merlin for help, using magic to allow him to spend at least one night with Igraine. The wizard decides to help, but demands a high price: their child will be his. Igraine gives birth to a son, who is taken by Merlin. The Duke's betrayal leaves its mark—no one trusts Uther, and he is attacked. Before dying, he plunges Excalibur into a stone and proclaims that the sword can only be his. However, Merlin casts a spell on the sword, promising that whoever draws it from the stone will become king. The wizard decides to name the child Arthur and prophesies that he will become king.
