Detroit, 1995. The city's brilliant and promising industrial development policy fails and leads to chaos and confusion, resulting in one of the most serious conflicts between whites and people of color in American history. People who lived peacefully nearby found themselves on opposite sides of the barricades. The 8 Mile Highway, separating Detroit from the suburbs, becomes the dividing line between blacks and whites. What is happening in the city is reflected in the music. In poor suburban neighborhoods where the main goal is survival, for many residents hip-hop becomes an emotional outlet, a means of breaking out of the harsh everyday reality.
