Richard Gere has opened up about the one condition that would convince him to reprise his role as Edward Lewis in a potential sequel to Pretty Woman. The beloved 1990 romantic comedy, directed by the late Garry Marshall, followed the unlikely romance between Edward, a wealthy businessman (Gere), and Vivian Ward, a spirited sex worker played by Julia Roberts. What begins as a straightforward arrangement soon blossoms into a modern-day fairy tale filled with emotional growth and reflections on social class. The film was a massive success, earning over $460 million globally and establishing Gere and Roberts as iconic romantic leads.
Despite its enduring popularity and years of fan speculation, neither Gere nor Roberts had expressed interest in returning for a sequel — until now. Speaking to People at the City Harvest Gala in New York, Gere revealed that he would consider returning to the role, but with one clear stipulation. His words:
“It all comes down to whether or not there’s a good script.”
